I'll be honest — when I booked the Shanzhou River Hotel, I wasn't expecting much. At around $40 USD a night, you go in with tempered expectations. What I found instead completely caught me off guard.
The Location
The hotel sits in Dongguan's (东莞) historic district, near Zhongshan Road (中山路) in Shilong Town (石龙镇). The area has been undergoing a renovation project since around 2018, and while a few pockets are still being worked on, it's probably about 90% complete at this point — and looking really good. Zhongshan Road itself is no ordinary street. It's recognized as Dongguan's first provincially designated Famous Historical and Cultural Street, lined with the kind of Qi-Lou (骑楼) arcade architecture that you only find in this part of southern China.

What makes the neighborhood particularly interesting is that it has two very different sides to it. The renovated sections are clean and vibrant — cafes, restaurants, boutique shops, small museums. But wander a little further into the older, untouched parts and things get much more interesting. You'll stumble across a traditional basket weaver still at work, and if you're lucky, a classic goose noodle restaurant that's the kind of place locals have been going to for years. That contrast between old and new is part of what makes this area worth exploring.
The contrast between old and new is part of what makes this area worth exploring — polished on one side, quietly alive on the other.
The Room
I booked the Old Street Arcade Luxury Bathtub Room, and wow. The size alone would justify the price — it's enormous, especially if you're coming from somewhere like Hong Kong where space is a luxury in itself. The design has a modern vintage feel that really suits the surroundings: beautiful wood flooring, touches of early 1900s character woven into a contemporary space.
The room — generous proportions with a modern vintage character.
Then there's the smell. I know that sounds like a strange thing to highlight, but this room had one of the best scents I've ever encountered in a hotel — a light, blossom-like fragrance that hit you the moment you walked in. It's the kind of detail you don't expect but immediately notice.
The Bathtub Setup
The bathtub is the star of the show. Whoever designed this room had the right idea putting the TV on a swivel mount — watch it from the bed, swing it around to face the tub. Simple idea, executed perfectly. It's one of those touches that makes you wonder why more hotels don't do it.
The swivel-mount TV facing the tub — a small detail that makes a real difference.
Location, quality, cleanliness — 10/10 across the board. For $40 a night, this is genuinely one of the best value stays in the Pearl River Delta. If you're passing through Dongguan and want somewhere that puts you right in the middle of the city's history without emptying your wallet, this is the one.
